Hurricane Season: What Can You Do To Protect Your Home?

It’s now the end of June, which means hurricane season is well underway.

  • Planning is key: weather forecasters can give us a couple of days warning when a severe storm is coming toward us, but it’s important to have an evacuation plan in place well before that.

  • Emergency hurricane kits are an important part of your planning: whether you end up evacuating or sheltering in place, sometimes you can be left without power for days at a time, and that’s where having some key items put together can come in handy.

  • And it’s not just planning for the hurricane itself, but planning for the aftermath that is important, and that’s where renter’s and homeowner’s insurance are important to consider.

Homeowner's Insurance: Changes To Be Aware Of

In case you missed it: From the Sarasota Herald-Tribune:

“Gov. Ron DeSantis signed property insurance legislation Friday that allows for larger rate hikes at state-run Citizens Property Insurance and makes other changes requested by private insurers and opposed by some consumer advocates.

Touting the bill as an effort to "turn the corner" on the struggling property insurance market, DeSantis signed the measure during an event in downtown Sarasota that included a roundtable discussion on insurance issues.”

Consumer lending advocates warn that this legislation may make it easier for banks and mortgage servicers to force insurance plans on homeowners, a situation known as “Force-Placed insurance.” Force-placed insurance premiums are typically higher and can lead to foreclosures.
