Senator Gwen Margolis passed away today, Tuesday, June 9, 2020. Senator Margolis served in the Miami-Dade County Commission, in the Florida House, and in the Florida Senate. Over the course of her 42-year career in public office, Senator Margolis championed women’s rights, gay rights, and pushed for social justice, and she became the first female president of the Florida Senate.

Miami-Dade County, FL: Reports emerged Monday that Attorney General William Barr would be sending Federal riot teams to Washington DC and Miami. Instead of condemning the racist violence that started the nationwide protests, Donald Trump has encouraged division, instigated violence, and threatened protesters with shooting. Today, he urged governors to “dominate” protesters and give anyone arrested at these protests a 10-year jail sentence.

Miami-Dade County, FL: One week ago, County Commissioner Esteban “Steve” Bovo and Commissioner Sosa called earned sick leave “communism.” Just after that, it was revealed that Steve Bovo received donations from an agent of Venezuelan dictator Nicholas Maduro. Yesterday, it came out that his chief fundraiser had a direct connection to the murderous Maduro regime. Steve Bovo sought to placate constituents by firing the fundraiser, but the damage is done.

MIAMI, FL: The Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee passed a resolution at its Monday meeting urging the Miami-Dade County Commission and the Mayor to “revisit and rescind their decision” to approve an amendment to the Comprehensive Development Master Plan allowing for the extension of the the SR 836 Expressway 13 miles outside the Urban Development Boundary. The resolution also called on the Commission and Mayor to rescind the federal application for permitting the toll road extension, and to cease allocating county staff and financial resources in pursuit of the project.
